Download & install
Download TypeIt, then open the file called TypeIt.dmg in your Downloads. A window appears — drag the TypeIt icon onto the Applications folder, and you're installed.
Open & activate
Open TypeIt from your Applications folder. A small window asks for your licence key — paste the key from your purchase and click Activate.
Say yes twice, then speak
Your Mac asks two quick permissions: Microphone (so TypeIt can hear you) and Accessibility (so it can type for you). Click Allow for both. TypeIt then quietly sets up its speech engines — one time only, a few minutes on wifi.
When the T in your menu bar says ready: click where you want text, hold the Right Option key ⌥, speak, let go.
That's it. You're dictating.
Your words appear as clean, punctuated text — in Mail, WhatsApp, Notes, anywhere. Six languages, detected automatically. Everything happens on your Mac, nothing goes to the cloud.
If something is not right
TypeIt fixes most microphone problems by itself, and tells you when it does. Here are the few things people ask about.
I press the key and nothing happens
Hold the key down the whole time you are speaking, then let go. A quick tap is ignored on purpose, so a stray key press never types into your work.
If you still get nothing, TypeIt may be resetting your microphone. You will see a small black bar at the bottom of your screen saying Microphone reset. Just hold the key and speak again.
It hears me, but no text appears
TypeIt needs permission to type into other apps. Open System Settings, go to Privacy & Security, then Accessibility, and switch TypeIt on.
If it is already switched on but still nothing appears, switch it off and on again, then quit and reopen TypeIt. macOS occasionally drops this permission after an update.
I am wearing AirPods and it will not hear me
This is expected, and TypeIt handles it. Bluetooth earbud microphones are unreliable for dictation, so TypeIt uses your Mac's own built-in microphone instead. Keep your AirPods in for listening and just speak towards your Mac as normal.
The text appears, but it is messy and not tidied up
On the very first run TypeIt sets up its AI engine once, which needs internet and takes a few minutes. Until that finishes you get the raw words with no clean-up.
Click the T in your menu bar: when it says AI cleanup: on-device with a tick, it is ready and your text will come out polished.
Nothing works at all right after installing
First launch downloads the speech engine, which needs an internet connection and a few minutes. Click the T in your menu bar and wait until it says Speech model: ready.
If your Mac just started up, give it a moment for wi-fi to connect. TypeIt keeps retrying on its own.
It says "Microphone unavailable, please reboot"
This one is rare. It means your Mac's audio system has got itself stuck, deep enough that TypeIt cannot reset it. Restart your Mac and it will clear.
